The Old School Way

My approach to teaching is rooted in the time-tested fundamentals of “old-school” music education — building a solid, wholistic musical foundation based upon these three pillars:

  • Musical literacy — learning to read music notation and TAB
  • Music theory — learning the structural elements of the 12-tone system
  • Technique — refining one’s physical approach to the instrument.

By focusing practice on these three pillars and pursuing incremental and attainable goals, diligent students can acquire an integrated comprehension of the lesson materials, and gradually build that solid musical foundation that lets them approach any style of music, and excel at playing it!

hendrix_on_giving_upIt isn’t just about learning one tune after another… frankly, you can find that for free on YouTube in your spare time. Formal lessons require focus, study, diligent practice… not to mention a substantial investment of money over time. I strive to make every lesson worth the investment.

Every style of music is based on
the same well-established musical foundation.
Methodically build that foundation,
and your potential as a player will be unleashed!

Dedicated students will learn everything from the most basic fundamentals to the most advanced techniques: from playing single notes, easy chording, rhythm and basic lead concepts to high-end guitar in the areas of classical, jazz, flamenco, fingerstyle, country, bluegrass, rock, blues and other styles.

What we might call “mastery” is more than just technical proficiency on an instrument… it’s also about connecting with yourself and expressing your heart and soul through your music. This is what being a “complete musician” is all about… a journey of self-discovery through the art and science of sound.
